THE GAME

The Incarnate is for the most part a jamjar, sandbox RP. This means that characters are trapped in the game-world (though not the city) and that character actions are generally unrestrained.

The game works on a one day IC = one day OOC basis, but backdating and backtagging are encouraged. Posts are presumed to start on the day posted unless stated otherwise.

There is currently no game plurk or chat. This may be changed in the future in there are enough requests. All important information or updates will appear on the OOC comm.

WHO CAN BE PLAYED?

Characters from almost source can be applied for, providing that they are NOT real people. Exceptions are made for historical figures from fictionalized media sources.

OCs can be applied for, but are held to a stricter apping process. The same goes for characters which have been AU'd to fit the game setting.

Canon OCs can be applied for, subject to the same stricter apping process as normal OCs, providing they have no relationship to canon characters (use your common sense to judge!). Canon OCs can only be applied for if a player has already had another character in-game with GOOD activity for three months.

Duplicates can be played as long as they are significantly different to others currently in game. For example, canon AUs such as Cloud (FF7) and Leon (kingdom Hearts) are acceptable, or reasonably different version from alternate media sources (such as comics!verse superheroes and their movie!verse versions). It IS possible to have a canon version and a version AU'd to the game setting at the same time.

The same character from two different canon points is not allowed, unless they are significantly different. if the version currently in-game has a problem with it, the later apper will not be accepted.

AU characters (canon characters with differences to their pasts) are not currently accepted, although this may be changed in future if there are enough requests. The same goes for characters with previous game history. The only exception to AUs are OCs or canon characters who are AU'd to be native to the game setting.

Non-human characters can be applied for, either in their original bodies or in humanized forms (possibly with attributes of their original bodies). The only exception is for significantly over-large characters, who must be sized down to human-scale if they wish to retain their form. If there is any concern over this, it can be discussed.

Dead/dying/ill characters can be taken from the moment just before death, in which case they will be fully-healed upon arrival (including terminal illnesses, serious diseases, mild bruises, etc). If the character is already dead in canon, it can be discussed.

Vampires or other beings that require a particular sustenance/power-source are appable. Again, please discuess this with the mod. (Awful lot of these discussions, aren't there?)

You may app an Incarnate for something that doesn't exist in-game (such as apping a Hetalia character as incarnate of their country). The game-world will then automatically alter in certain ways as their effect on reality asserts itself.

Characters are presumed to be apped as Incarnate. You can choose to app your character in as a non-Incarnate if you wish (which makes the apping process vastly easier!) but this means your character will not receive the powers of an Incarnate, nor the benefits (such as free housing, food and a stipend) that comes with it.

If a character is apped as an Incarnate, they MUST FIT (personality-wise) the aegis you are apping them as. Hopefully this is obvious. If they have any conflicting personality traits, these must be thoroughly explained.

WHAT POWERS/ITEMS/PETS COME WITH THEM?

(An explanation of Incarnate powers can be found here.)

Any skill/ability/power which doesn't rely on sources outside the game-dimension (such as abilities powered by magic or gods inherent to the character native dimension) will be kept. If a character draws on magic around them to cast spells, for example, they will lose the ability. If their magic is internally generated, they will keep it.

The only exception to this is any power/ability which conflicts with what they represent as an Incarnate. For example, if the character is a mage who is the Incarnate of Happiness, they will lose the ability to negatively affect people's emotions with their magic, but will still keep the rest of their magic.

Anything that's on their body or being held at the time they're taken will come with them. This may also include items that any part of their soul is contained within.

In general, pets/animal companions will not be taken. The exceptions are those with mental or spiritual bonds to the character, animals thay may have been crawling or perches on the character when they were taken, creatures such as summonings or Pokémon that reside on the character's person and are not summoned from another dimension, animals vital to the character's continued health/life and velociraptors. Every game needs more velociraptors.

Personal weapons are allowed, with a reminder that specific types of ammunition may not be available in the city of Vita.

CAN MY REGULAR HUMAN CHARACTER GAIN POWERS?

If the character is apped as an Incarnate, they will automatically gain power over their aegis. Aside from that, general skills are also highly useful here.

There are two other ways to gain the powers of an Incarnate without apping as one; the first is a secret in-game, the other little-known but can be dug up with some research.
» 1} The secret method! If a non-Incarnate character OR one of a similar but lesser-powered Incarnate kills an Incarnate, the dead incarnate's power will automatically pass into their killer. For example, if a nomal person killed any Incarnate OR if an Incarnate killed an Incarnate above them in rank (such as a Gamma killing a Beta) who had a similar power (for example, if the lesser Incarnate's power was over streams and the greater Incarnate's power was over all water sources). This isn't made public for obvious reasons.
Conflicting powers (such as a fire-based Incarnate killing the Incarnate of Water) will not bestow any powers. It'll just make people angry over the dead Incarnate. If there are any questions/concerns, please leave a comment.
» 2} The little-known method! If an incarnate wants to, they can transfer the majority of their powers to a Regent. The Incarnate will keep their immortality and advanced healing/regeneration (and any canon powers), but the rest will be put under the control of the Regent. The Incarnate can immediately take this power back at any time but cannot otherwise use it. if the Regent dies, the power will automatically snap back to the Incarnate. There is no way to tell if an Incarnate has made a Regent, unless someone can sense what powers someone currently holds.

There is currently no way for an Incarnate to become more powerful except through these methods.

DOES THIS WORLD HAVE MAGIC?

Aside from the Incarnate, not really - and the inhabitants are so used to the existence of such beings, they're considered more of a little-understood science than anything magical.

If a character is capable of using magic, most people will put it down to Incarnate powers, although suspicion will rise if a character is using a number of significantly different spells.

Demons/summonings cannot be called from other dimensions/worlds. No rituals or magics that rely on non-internally generated magic or mana will function.

If an Incarnate of Magic (or any sub-section of it) is accepted, the rules on magic and magic-use are subject to change immediately.

HOW MANY CAN I RESERVE OR APPLY FOR?

You can reserve two characters at once, but apply for only one (an exception will be made for the first few months of the game, where you may apply for two characters at once). You may have three characters total in game, although more may be allowed in light of good activity levels.

You may have no more than two characters from each canon, only one of which may be a main character. This is to prevent player-cest. If you feel an exemption should be made in a particular case, please comment.

CAN MY CHARACTER DIE?

Upon arrival, all characters are fully-healed (if they're missing limbs, etc, the player may wish to keep this as such). If they're an Incarnate, they will also be resistant to aging and disease and have a faster and better healing/regeneration rate (approximately five times better). Despite this, it is possible for characters to be killed by accident or attack.

If a character is killed, the player has two options. The first is that the character be ressurected, either by another character with such powers, or by Vivo, the Incarnate of Life. Vivo can only bring life back to a character that has been dead less than a day, or whose soul has been captured and safely contained somewhere.

If the character is unable to be resurrected or the player doesn't want them to be, they can simply die. In which case the character and the aegis they hold power over will be up for grabs to other appers.

I WANT TO APP A CHARACTER THAT WAS ALREADY DEAD/DROPPED!

If you want to re-apply for a character you played before, you can either app them in as not realizing any time has passed; that they went home without their Incarnate powers or memories of the game-world, and have now returned with both (see canon-updating, below) or bring them in completely fresh, as if they were from an identical but alternate version of their original dimension.

If applying for a character previously played by someone else, you MUST bring them in as if from an identical but alternate version of their original world. You must have the explicit permission of the previous player if you wish to apply for someone else's OC or if you want to apply for a dropped character with all their in-game backstory and CR.

CAN MY CHARACTER CANON-UPDATE?

Yes. The character will be taken out of play for anywhere between a day and a week (player's choice), during which they will have vanished from the game. If you wish to continue backtagging threads made before their disappearance, that's fine.

At the end of the time, they will wake up in bed one morning, recalling having gone back home with the memories of the game-world and any Incarnate powers gone, gone through the canon-update events and suddenly been returned to the world with any Incarnate powers back in place.

CAN MY CHARACTERS INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER?

If you play multiple characters, they can be handwaved as interacting 'behind the scenes'. You may also thread with both your characters, but these cannot be used for Activity Check unless there is a large amount of activity from other players' characters in the same thread.

You cannot play more than two characters from the same canon, nor can both those characters be main characters. If you think an exception should be made, leave a comment or get in touch.

ANOTHER CHARACTER IS THE INCARNATE I WANT MINE TO BE!

All types of Incarnate are listed on the Taken list, so pick something different. Aside from that, consider making them a lesser or greater power - if you wanted an Incarnate of Wildfires, maybe they'd be better suited to Candle Flames? There can only be ONE Incarnate of each specific thing.

If you have both reserved, both of you can apply for your characters, and the application will be based on general app quality (which includes justification for why your character best suits that Incarnate power). If you have a second-choice aegis, you can also write the justification for that power, too.

If both apps are of sufficient quality and the characters equally represent the aegis in question, judgement will be made based on who posted their application first. If the first-posted app requires something such as a small clarification on a matter, rather than a revision, they will still be the one to be accepted. The second-posted application can then either redefine their Incarnate power, be accepted as a non-Incarnate, or head over to wankgate.

HOW ARE POSTS MADE?

When a mommy post and a daddy post love each other very, very much, they make a special kind of hug! Or they adopt.

Action posts and logs are posted to the main comm. There's no set way to post these, but keep in mind a few things; long posts, large images, anything sexual or extreme violence should be cut (and possibly locked). If a post is back- or forward-dated, SAY SO. Anything sexual or possibly triggering (rule of common sense applies) should be warned for above the cut. It's recommended you follow the general rule of listing When/Where/Who (or Open to anyone) on the post. If you want to provide multiple scenarioes for interaction, feel free.

Network posts go on the network comm. The Network was specially made so Incarnate could communicate without having to worry about keeping up a completely positive, personable, harmless image in front of regular humanity, which means that normal humans aren't generally allowed to access it. In fact, the Network is almost a complete secret outside of Incarnate and the City Council. Exceptions can be made for non-Incarnate with non-human powers. Normal humans can gain full access to the Network on recommendation from an Incarnate, but will be vetted first.

Network posts follow the same rules of cutting, locking and warning that main comm posts do, as well as mentioning if a post is back/forward-dated and what type of post it is (see below). Network posts are not anonymous unless someone has sufficient skill (or a canon or Incarnate ability) to hack the Network and post them as such, in which case, make sure to state it OOcly within the post. Players must receive permission to hack anyone else's private posts/accounts.

Network posts come in several types - text, voice or video. As the network must be accessed via computers or phones connected to the city intranet, video and voice posts/replies can only be made from hardware fitted with cameras/microphones. The city's communication network is excellent and singal should be good pretty much everywhere. Outside the city, signal strength is worse but can be articifically boosted.

Accidental posts are completely impossible ICly and OOCly punishable by death.

OOC posts such as intros, drops, plotting posts, memes, etc, can be posted to the OOC comm. Regular, anonymous-enabled HMD memes will be posted just to get the better of anyone without an HMD post on their journal. Or so people feel better about giving crit, whichever works best. The same goes for regular Plot With Me posts.

Posts on the main and network comms should add the name and canon of the poster and anyone threading within it. You can also add what type of network post, if you wish. The mod won't accept 'I did complete my activity check, but I forgot to tag posts so now I can't find posts with my character in' as an excuse, although 'my dog ate it' may be allowed.

WHAT'S THE ACTIVITY CHECK?

Activity checks are held on the last week of every month, and will have a reasonable length of time to check in (varying depending on the time in year of RL - you won't be expected to check in after a few days if it's finals or Christmas).

There must be one post on either the network or main comm that is OPEN TO EVERYONE, every month. If a character is accepted late in a month, or was on hiatus for much of it, this can be waived for the month in question.

Along with the post, characters must have at least thirty comments spread over a maximum of two posts. This is a minimum. Exceptions can be made for one-off months in the event of previous good activity.

If you link your character's post and haven't responded to the comments, everyone reserves the right to side-eye.

Please remember Rule 9 on the Rule page - character squatters can be kicked out. There's a difference between busy times of year and constantly just scraping by.

WHAT IS THERE TO DO?

For the most part, the game is considered to take place (at least for now) within the mega-city of Vita. Life can exist outside the city, but with far more difficulty. Within a short distance of the city outskirts, the land is quite fertile, and there's a good stock of fish in the water. There are various farms and a few hamlets set up. As the distances increases, the world becomes rapidly more barren - it's possible to scratch out a living, as long as you can trade for necessities from the city or farms, but it isn't recommended.

Within the city, you may want to take a look at the Locations page. if your character wants to set-up, work at or visit a type of business that isn't included there, simply leave a comment on the page.

Player-run plots are allowed and encouraged. Unless the plot is particularly wide-spanning or requires mod assistance, you do not need permission. You are also allowed to kill most NPCs.

Incarnate characters have food and a home provided for them, but are welcome to live elsewhere, keep a job or engage in hobbies. If underage, they are expected to go to school. Incarnate characters may also be called upon to use their power to assist in the functioning of the city, or to take down normal or Incarnate criminals that city law enforecement can't deal with.

Non-Incarnate characters will need to acquire some way to live (if underage, they will be placed in a home).

Regular events will occur, based on anything from natural events to diplomatic functions, to Incarnate power accidents, to anti-Incarnate activity. Suggestions can be made to the mod at any time.

Characters are welcome to live in the city in almost any way they choose; whether to run for the Council, join a criminal organization, start a family, or leave the city and explore outside. As a sandbox game, there are basically no limits; if the players want any mod assistance, simply contact the mod.

Game-wide plots involving the Existence Incarnate and other such NPCs will occur eventually, but can be opted out of. These may include (but aren't limited to!) anything from political intrigue plots involving the criminal underworld, businesses and Council, to investigation or combat plots involving Incarnate/non-Incarnate crimes, cults, anti-Incarnate activity, to diplomatic needs such as media events, pro-Incarnate propaganda, elections and such. All characters should be able to be included in the majority of events, regardless of whether or not they have canon or Incarnate powers, what skills they have, or whether they're aligned with a particular faction or group.

ARE THERE NPCS?

General NPC citizens such as random passers-by, fans or shop-staff can be played or handwaved by players. There are 48,000,000 people in the mega-city, after all.

NPCs that CANNOT be played or interacted with outside of mod permission are:
» The Incarnate of Existence - an otherwise nameless person, believed to be female, location unknown for secruity reasons.
» Vivo, the Incarnate of Life - ruler of the city and generally too busy to get involved with things anyway. Spends most of his time making sure the city doesn't get spontaneously wiped out and preventing any chance of anti-Incarnate uprisings.
» The Council - not a group of shadowy, sinister figures, but a bunch of elected, mostly non-Incarnate officials and politicians who oversee the smooth running of the city.
» Other Incarnates - there are very few other Incarnates in existence, most of them in the Gamma or Beta range. You can handwave general interaction with them for purposes of finding out information about the world/Incarnates, but please don't list them as a specific incarnate, in case someone wants to app a character with the same aegis.

Chances are, you'll see very little of these people outside of special events. If you would like specific interaction with them (or feel like overthrowing and assassinating Vivo), just get in touch with the mod.

You're welcome to kill off general citizen NPCs, but please be aware that Incarnate or not, murder is still a serious crime, with IC consequences! f you don't want to face those consequences, best cover it up well (or frame someone else).

OCs and PBs

What can you use as PBs? Does it have to be models? What about self-drawn characters, or characters from obscure comics/canons that likely will never be applied?
